It is known that there are multiple backup programs for your information safeguard and recovery but, why Veeam is so different from the others? What advantages can Veeam offer that others don’t?

The answer is simple, Veeam Backup & Replication offers several advantages that make it a preferred choice for data protection and recovery, such as:

Fast Recovery: Veeam’s Instant VM Recovery feature allows for the rapid restoration of entire virtual machines, minimizing downtime by delivering high-speed backups and replications.

Automation and Orchestration: Veeam provides automation capabilities for backup tasks, reducing manual effort and the potential for errors.

Comprehensive Reporting and Monitoring: Veeam includes detailed reporting and monitoring tools to help stay informed about the status of their backups and recoveries. Thanks to this feature you don’t have to worry about supervising the status of your backups and recoveries. Veeam does all the work for you.

Cost-Effective: Veeam offers flexible licensing options and can reduce overall backup and recovery costs by leveraging existing infrastructure and optimizing storage use.

HOW DOES VEEAM BACKUP WORKS?

Setup and Configuration

  • Veeam Backup & Replication software is installed on a dedicated server.
  • The backup repository is configured where your backups will be stored.
  • The virtual machines (VMs) are added to the physical servers, or cloud instances to the Veeam console.

Create a Backup Job

  • A new backup job is defined in Veeam.
  • The virtual machines, servers, or files you want to back up must be selected.
  • The backup repository, (where the backups will be saved) needs to be chosen.

Specify Backup Settings

  • The schedule must be set up for when backups should run (daily, weekly).
  • The backup retention policies must be configured (how long to keep the backups).
  • Advanced features are enabled, like deduplication, compression, or encryption if needed. (More information is provided below).

Run the Backup Job

  • Start the backup job manually or wait for the scheduled time.
  • Veeam will create a snapshot of the selected virtual machines or data.
  • The data is then copied to the backup repository, ensuring it’s protected and available for recovery.

Verification and Monitoring

  • Veeam automatically verifies the integrity of the backups to ensure they are recoverable.
  • The backup job’s progress and status are monitored through the Veeam console.
  • You can review reports and logs to confirm successful completion and identify any issues.

Recovery

  • If data recovery is needed, open the Veeam console.
  • The backup from which you want to restore the data is selected.
  • The type of recovery needs to be selected (Full VM restore, file-level recovery, application item recovery).
  • Follow the prompts to restore the data to its original location or a new location.

ADVANCED FEATURES

DEDUPLICATION: Refers to the process of eliminating duplicate copies of repeating data to save storage space and improve efficiency.

COMPRESSION: Process of reducing the size of the backup data by encoding it in a more efficient format.

ENCRYPTION: Securing backup data by converting it into a coded format that can only be accessed or deciphered by authorized users with the correct description key.
